I recently put on 185/70R-14 GENERAL ALTIMAX RT43 on my wire wheels ('70 BGT) that size has been working for me. As for the tire, I needed something that performed good in wet as it rains often (always?) in the pacific northwest. These do the job fine but there are others out there that do better but the problem is trying to find good stuff in the 14" rim size.
I will say on with spirited driving in dry conditions they hold well but traction breaks earlier than I would have expected, but it's not 100% traction loss, more like 40% and it's progressive from that point on. But that big drop on the initial break will wake you up the first time it happens but there's more than enough left to keep things under control.
